Last week, Qualcomm quietly unveiled the Snapdragon 6s Gen 3 chip, and it was noticed that this chipset looked surprisingly similar to the Snapdragon 695, which was released in 2021. Qualcomm has now admitted that this is indeed the case.
Qualcomm admits Snapdragon 6s Gen 3 is a renamed version of an older chip
Qualcomm confirmed these suspicions in a statement to Android Authority, saying “Snapdragon 6s Gen 3 is an enhanced version of the Snapdragon 695 and offers better CPU, GPU and AI performances.”
This statement indicates that the Snapdragon 6s Gen 3 provides an increase in CPU clock speed and improvements in GPU and AI performances. However, Qualcomm chose not to go into the details of these improvements. This is further evidence that a chip that was originally released three years ago is being rebranded and re-released.
Qualcomm’s complex naming scheme has the potential to confuse users with such rebranding moves. However, there is a caveat to note here: “s” is the weakest, followed by the ‘normal’ numbered chip and “+” the best.
Qualcomm’s strategy of rebranding an old chip and launching it on the market is actually common in the tech world. By improving and rebranding existing technology, companies aim to offer “innovative” products to consumers.
This strategy can also make sense in terms of reducing production costs and making the most efficient use of existing technology. However, such moves can increase users’ confusion and make them feel that they are buying old technology instead of a new product.
Users have mixed feelings about Qualcomm’s strategy. On the one hand, there are advantages to having a chip that offers better performance.
